The Merchantville Department of Public Works announces a new “Leaf Collection Procedures and Schedule” which will commence the week of October 24, 2011.Beginning the week of October 24, 2011 the Department of Public Works will only accept leaves that are either in a container or bagged. You can bag your leaves in open bags (biodegradable bags preferred) or place them in open trash cans at curbside on the week of your Yard Waste/Brush collection day.
Residents must comply with the following guidelines to ensure pickup of their leaves:
• Collections will be made bi-weekly in the morning on your regularly scheduled yard waste/brush week.
Example: If you live east of Centre, your leaf collection will be the week of the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month beginning at 7 AM. If you live west of Centre, your leaf collection will be the week of the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month beginning at 7 AM.
• Landscape/lawn services must remove leaves from site or place in bag or container.
• Leaves loosely raked into the roadway or parkstrip area will not be collected.
Benefits
- • Bi-weekly collections mean more timely collections and less inconvenience.
- In the past, inclement weather would prevent leaf collection crews from picking up leaves during a designated week and creating a backlog and an incomplete schedule. This new schedule and procedure should alleviate those issues.
- • Cleaner, neater neighborhoods with less on-street parking concerns.
- Streets would not be as obstructed with leaf piles and less leaves would blow onto your neighbors’ yards and Borough’s streets.
- • A safer condition would exist.
- There would be less potential for leaves to catch on fire and there would be fewer wet leaves on which cars could skid.
- • Bagging of leaves reduces the workload of the Borough’s fall leaf collection program, with cost savings to taxpayers.
