Trash collection in Merchantville, Gloucester Township and Cherry Hill will cost almost 10 percent less under a five-year joint contract officials announced Wednesday. Elected officials from Merchantville said they welcomed cooperative deals with other groups and municipalities. The contract between the participants and Mount Laurel based Republic Services, a
national trash collection and recycling corporation, totals $28.6 million and begins Jan. 1. Merchantville will save $50,000 in the first year of the contract primarily from layoffs in the eight-employee public works department. There will be no changes to the trash pickup methods or schedule after the first of the year.
