March 8, 2011 at 4 p.m. is the deadline for candidates to file nominating petitions. The Annual School Election will take place on April 27, 2011. This information is accurate as of January 6, 2011. Proposed state legislation could change the school board member election, budget development and governance calendar. NJSBA will provide members with updated information on its website www.njsba.org if necessary. To become a member of a local board of education in New Jersey, you must: Be able to read and write. Hold citizenship and one year’s residence in the school district. Have no interest in any contract with, or claim against, the boar. Not hold office as mayor or member of the governing body of the same district. Be registered to vote in the district and not be disqualified as a voter under N.J.S.A. 19:4-1.
