State issues denial of consolidation plan application

The state Department of Community Affairs has shot down an effort to study whether Merchantville and Cherry Hill should merge under a 2007 state law, despite support from hundreds of Merchantville residents and Cherry Hill’s mayor and council. The Act does not allow for a hybrid application process through action of a governing body of one municipality and a representative committee of another municipality and the application submitted for consideration does not meet one of the two standards and will not be considered for that reason.
