After a major renovation, the former Towne House restaurant in downtown Merchantville has reopened as Merchantville Diner. Owner Gliciria Kalathas is running the place with her husband, Mike, and other family members. The 65-seat diner boasts modern decor with an addition in the back, new kitchen and counter, and new bathrooms with handicapped access.
The Towne House first opened in 1975 and closed after the death of longtime owner Chris Saffos last June. “We were down to the block,” says Kalathas, a Merchantville resident, of the year-long renovation. “We had to start from scratch with everything, from the sheet rock to the fire insulation, to all new plumbing and electric.” The diner will have a grand opening Monday. Hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, to 3 p.m. Sunday. Dinner prices range from $6 to $12, in keeping with the Towne House tradition of homey food at reasonable prices.
